The Minneapolis Police Department recorded 4,484 offenses in August 2023, down 0% from July 2023 (4,504) and up 4% from August 2022 (4,323).

The largest increase from a year earlier was property damage / vandalism (671 against 482, up 39%), and the largest decrease was vehicle parts theft (170 against 282, down 40%).

Theft from motor vehicle, the category that covers car break-ins, was 353 (down 15% from a year earlier); motor vehicle theft was 694 (up 25%).

MPD recorded 7 homicide offenses in August 2023, against 9 in August 2022.

By neighborhood, compared with August 2022, offenses were up the most: Lowry Hill East (136 to 182), Central (63 to 98), Lyndale (82 to 115); down the most: Downtown West (320 to 277), Hawthorne (147 to 111), Near - North (118 to 82).
