What's wrong with the data, and what we did about it

Every number on this site comes from the Minneapolis Police Department's open data feed. A feed has gaps. This page states the ones we know about, with live figures, and logs each problem we found, when, and what changed.

Oct 5, 2026 Rows MPD could not place arrived as a point at 0,0. A north-edge geofence boundary also misjudged some locations. Unplaced rows are stored as having no location, still counted in totals and left off maps. The geofence edge was corrected. An accuracy test suite now checks the stored data against the city's feed and every page against an independent calculation. Records posted late, revised or withdrawn by MPD are now reconciled on each sync.
Oct 4, 2026 The latest days looked like a sharp drop because MPD had not finished posting them. The homepage showed down 38.6% for the last 30 days. Figures now stop 10 days before the newest record. Resident reports, which can describe incidents MPD also has, are no longer added to MPD counts.
Oct 2, 2026 Production was missing 2019 and part of 2020. The importer stopped quietly when the city's feed returned an error page, reported success, and marked the job done. A failed page is retried and, if it still fails, fails the whole import. History loads one year at a time, deduplicated, with a marker per year.
Sep 27, 2026 Category handling for property damage and vandalism changed several times, leaving old rows classified inconsistently. All MPD history was re-imported under one set of rules. Property damage is its own category, because MPD's data does not say whether the damage was to a vehicle.
