The Minneapolis Police Department recorded 4,357 offenses in May 2023, up 11% from April 2023 (3,941) and up 11% from May 2022 (3,921).

The largest increase from a year earlier was motor vehicle theft (725 against 399, up 82%), and the largest decrease was vehicle parts theft (146 against 308, down 53%).

Theft from motor vehicle, the category that covers car break-ins, was 335 (up 9% from a year earlier); motor vehicle theft was 725 (up 82%).

MPD recorded 8 homicide offenses in May 2023, against 5 in May 2022.

By neighborhood, compared with May 2022, offenses were up the most: Whittier (197 to 261), Lyndale (76 to 116), Lowry Hill East (123 to 162); down the most: Downtown West (273 to 205), Northeast Park (65 to 33), Near - North (124 to 98).
